Mobile Hazardous Substance Cupboard FAQs
What is a mobile hazardous substance cupboard?
A mobile hazardous substance cupboard is a lockable chemical storage cabinet mounted on a mobile base. It allows compatible substances to be stored securely and repositioned between suitable indoor work areas when necessary.
Where are mobile hazardous substance cupboards used?
Typical locations include laboratories, science preparation rooms, schools, engineering workshops, maintenance departments, manufacturing sites and industrial facilities where chemical containers may be needed at more than one workstation.
What sizes are available?
The QMP mobile hazardous substance cupboard range includes two models:
- 840 × 900 × 460 mm
- 1040 × 900 × 460 mm
Both models are supplied with one adjustable spill-retaining shelf. Check the external dimensions, container sizes, loaded weight and movement route before ordering.
How does a mobile cupboard differ from a fixed hazardous cupboard?
A mobile cupboard can be repositioned within a suitable workplace, while a fixed hazardous cupboard remains in one designated storage location. Mobile units are useful where compatible chemicals need to be taken closer to different work areas.
For permanent storage, compare our fixed hazardous substance cupboards .
What locking system is fitted?
QMP mobile hazardous substance cupboards use snag-free handles with two-point locking. Access should remain limited to trained and authorised personnel according to the workplace chemical-storage procedure.
Do mobile hazardous cupboards include spill containment?
Yes. The cupboards include an adjustable galvanised spill-retaining shelf and an integral liquid-tight sump. These features help restrict minor leaks within the cabinet but do not replace compatible containers, routine inspections or a documented spill-response procedure.
Can different chemicals be stored together?
Only substances confirmed as compatible through their safety data sheets and the workplace risk assessment should be stored together. Acids, alkalis, oxidising agents, flammable liquids and other incompatible substances may require separate cabinets.
For corrosive substances, see our acid and alkali cupboards.
Can flammable liquids be stored in a mobile hazardous cupboard?
Do not assume that a general hazardous substance cupboard is suitable for flammable liquids. Check the product safety data sheet, quantity, container type and workplace risk assessment. Flammable products may require a separately specified cabinet.

Does a mobile hazardous cupboard establish COSHH compliance?
No. A mobile hazardous cupboard can support storage, access-control and spill-management measures identified through a COSHH assessment, but the cupboard alone does not establish compliance.
Employers must also assess exposure risks, check chemical compatibility, maintain suitable procedures and provide appropriate information and training.
Browse our wider COSHH cupboard range.
How should a loaded mobile chemical cupboard be moved?
Before moving the cupboard, ensure every container is closed, secure and suitable for transport. Check the floor condition, doorways, ramps, thresholds and total loaded weight. Move the unit slowly and position it on a stable, level surface.
Are mobile hazardous substance cupboards fire resistant?
A general hazardous substance cupboard should not be described as fire resistant unless it has a stated, tested fire-resistance rating. A reaction-to-fire classification does not provide a tested period of protection for the cupboard contents.
Are QMP mobile hazardous cupboards manufactured in the UK?
Yes. QMP mobile hazardous substance cupboards are designed and manufactured in the United Kingdom for professional workplace use.

How are mobile hazardous cupboards delivered?
Delivery is normally made kerbside to an accessible mainland UK address. The cupboard may arrive palletised, and suitable unloading arrangements may be required.

Spill Management
The raised shelf edges and integral liquid-tight sump help restrict minor leaks within the cupboard. These features do not replace compatible containers, routine inspections, suitable absorbent materials or a documented workplace spill-response procedure.
Chemical Compatibility
Only substances confirmed as compatible through their safety data sheets and the workplace risk assessment should be stored together. Acids, alkalis, oxidising agents, flammable liquids and other incompatible substances may require separately specified cabinets.
Do not assume that a general hazardous substance cupboard is suitable for every chemical. Check the substance classification, concentration, container material, quantity and storage instructions before loading the cabinet.
COSHH Responsibilities
A mobile hazardous substance cupboard can support storage, access-control and spill-management measures identified through a COSHH assessment. However, purchasing the cupboard alone does not establish compliance.
Employers must also assess exposure risks, restrict access, maintain suitable procedures, train relevant employees and regularly inspect the cupboard and its contents.
Moving and Positioning the Cupboard
Before moving the cupboard, ensure all containers are closed, upright and secure. Check the total loaded weight, floor surface, thresholds, ramps and doorways along the intended route. Move the cabinet slowly and position it on a stable, level surface away from escape routes and sources of impact.
Fire Classification
Where an EN 13501-1 reaction-to-fire classification is stated by the manufacturer, it describes how the classified material reacts when exposed to fire. It does not provide a tested period of fire resistance or confirm that the cupboard is suitable for flammable-liquid storage.
Choosing the Correct Chemical Storage Cupboard
Select the model according to the container dimensions, total stored weight, available working space and required movement route. A fixed cupboard may be more appropriate where chemicals do not need to be moved between work areas.

Specialist storage is also available for flammable liquids and acids and alkalis.
