Large & XL Lockers for Bulky PPE, Workwear and Equipment

Large lockers and extra-large lockers provide secure storage where a conventional staff locker does not have enough usable internal space. They are particularly useful for bulky PPE, helmets, boots, workwear, motorcycle clothing, large bags, tool bags and other workplace equipment.

This page focuses on high-capacity personal storage. For ordinary employee belongings, compare our staff lockers. For the broader workplace range, see workplace lockers.

When Is an Extra-Large Locker the Better Choice?

Storage requirement Suitable locker type Reason
Large bags, bulky PPE, helmets, boots or several items per user Large or XL locker Provides substantially more usable storage volume than a standard personal locker
Coats, uniforms and hanging workwear Garment locker Designed specifically around clothing and hanging storage
Clean clothing and used workwear need separating Clean & dirty locker Divided internal storage keeps two clothing groups apart
Wet PPE or clothing needs active drying Heated locker Warm-air circulation assists drying between uses
Tools or batteries also need charging Tool charging locker Secure storage is combined with electrical charging
High ventilation and visual inspection are priorities Wire mesh locker Open mesh construction provides airflow and visibility

Large PPE and Equipment Lockers

Bulky protective equipment can quickly fill a conventional staff locker. Helmets, safety footwear, high-visibility clothing, jackets, respirator cases, tool bags and other equipment may all need to be stored by the same employee. An XL locker gives these items more room and can reduce the need to split one person's equipment between several smaller compartments.

The actual internal capacity required should be based on the equipment being stored, not just the number of employees. Where possible, identify the largest item first and then allow space for the remaining PPE, clothing and bags.

Large Lockers for Motorcycle Clothing and Helmets

Extra-large lockers can be useful at workplaces where employees commute by motorcycle and need secure space for a helmet, jacket, trousers, boots and other riding equipment during the working day. The bulk of protective motorcycle clothing can make a conventional personal locker impractical.

If clothing regularly arrives wet, storage volume alone may not be enough. In that situation compare the requirement with heated drying lockers.

Industrial and Warehouse Applications

Large steel lockers are particularly suited to warehouses, factories, depots, engineering operations, workshops, utilities and industrial changing areas. They can also be useful in facilities where staff are issued with several pieces of PPE or specialist equipment that must remain secure between shifts.

For sites with changing-room clothing requirements as well as equipment storage, compare large lockers with garment lockers and clean & dirty divided lockers before standardising on one format.

Choosing the Right XL Locker Capacity

Do not choose an extra-large locker purely from its external size. Check the largest item that must fit inside, the shape of helmets or bags, whether boots will be stored on the locker floor and whether coats or workwear need room to hang without being crushed.

Also consider whether employees will permanently retain the locker or whether storage will be shared between shifts. Permanent allocation generally requires capacity for the user's full equipment set, while managed shared use may need a different quantity and locking arrangement.

Locking Large Workplace Lockers

The standard locking arrangement and available alternatives depend on the selected model. Assigned lockers commonly use keyed locks or padlock-compatible options, while combination or electronic systems may suit sites that want to reduce key management.

See our locker lock options before finalising the required locking method.

Planning an Extra-Large Locker Installation

Before ordering, confirm:

  • the number of users requiring high-capacity storage
  • the largest item each user needs to store
  • whether helmets, boots, PPE, tools or large bags will be stored together
  • whether hanging space is required
  • the available floor and wall space
  • door-opening and aisle clearance
  • the required locking method
  • required frame and door colours
  • delivery access and unloading arrangements

Large lockers occupy more floor area than standard staff lockers, so room layout and circulation space should be checked before ordering a full run.

Need Help Choosing Large or XL Lockers?

If you provide the number of users, the main items being stored and the available room dimensions, Total Locker Service can help narrow down the appropriate large-locker size and locking arrangement.
