QMP COSHH Cupboard FAQs
What is a COSHH cupboard?
A COSHH cupboard is a secure, clearly identified cabinet used to store workplace chemicals and potentially harmful substances. It can support the control measures identified through a COSHH risk assessment by helping organise containers, restrict access and contain minor leaks.
Compare the wider COSHH and safety cabinet range for other specialist storage options.
Does using a COSHH cupboard make a workplace compliant?
No. A COSHH cupboard can support workplace storage controls, but the cupboard alone does not establish compliance. Employers must also assess exposure risks, follow safety data sheets, use suitable containers, label substances correctly, control access and maintain appropriate spill and emergency procedures.
What can be stored in a COSHH cupboard?
Suitability depends on the chemical, quantity, container type, safety data sheet and workplace risk assessment. COSHH cupboards may be used for many workplace substances, but they should not be treated as universal storage for every hazardous, corrosive, oxidising or flammable product.
Can incompatible chemicals be stored in the same COSHH cupboard?
Incompatible substances should be segregated according to their safety data sheets and the site risk assessment. Acids, alkalis, oxidising agents, flammable liquids and other reactive materials may require separate, purpose-selected cabinets.
Browse our specialist safety cabinets when separate chemical storage is required.
What is the difference between grey COSHH cupboards and yellow hazardous cupboards?
The graphite-grey COSHH cupboards and yellow hazardous substance cupboards are separate QMP product ranges with different finishes and available configurations. Cupboard colour alone does not determine which chemicals can be stored. Selection should always be based on the substance safety data sheets, compatibility, containment requirements and workplace assessment.
Compare our yellow hazardous substance cupboards before selecting a range.
Do QMP COSHH cupboards include spill containment?
Applicable floor-standing models include an integral liquid-tight sump, while floor chests have a welded integrated sump. Adjustable spill-retaining shelves also help limit the spread of minor leaks. Wall-mounted cupboards may not include a base sump, so the selected model should be checked before ordering.
How much weight can each COSHH cupboard shelf support?
Applicable galvanised shelves have a maximum evenly distributed load of 50 kg. The load should be spread across the shelf rather than concentrated in one area. Heavy containers should normally be placed on lower shelves to support stability and safer handling.
Which COSHH cupboard configurations are available?
The QMP graphite-grey COSHH range includes floor-standing cupboards, wall-mounted cabinets, low-height units, mobile cupboards, floor chests and selected higher-security models. Choose the configuration according to the available space, container dimensions, storage volume and required access control.
Browse other commercial storage cabinets where specialist chemical storage is not required.
Are wall-mounted COSHH cupboards supplied with wall fixings?
Wall-mounted models are supplied pre-drilled, but wall fixings are not normally included. The installer must select fixings suitable for the wall construction, cabinet weight and intended contents.
Are mobile COSHH cupboards and raised stands available?
Mobile configurations are available within the range, and selected cupboards can be fitted to approximately 500 mm-high stands with an adjustable foot. Compatibility should be confirmed for the chosen cabinet before ordering a stand or mobile option.
What security features are available?
Standard cupboards generally include snag-free handles and two-point locking. Selected higher-security COSHH cupboards use fully welded steel construction and seven-lever safe locks where stronger access control is required.
What does EN 13501-1 classification mean?
EN 13501-1 is a reaction-to-fire classification. It describes how a classified product reacts when exposed to fire. It does not mean that the COSHH cupboard is a fire-resistant cabinet or that it is automatically suitable for storing every flammable substance.
Are QMP COSHH cupboards manufactured in the UK?
Yes. QMP manufactures the graphite-grey COSHH cupboard range in the UK for professional workplace, industrial, laboratory, maintenance and commercial applications.

How are COSHH cupboards delivered?
Delivery is normally made kerbside to an accessible mainland UK address. Larger cupboards may arrive palletised, and the customer may need to provide suitable unloading arrangements. Lead times vary by model, size and current availability.

Specification
QMP Graphite Grey COSHH Cupboard Specification
QMP graphite grey COSHH cupboards provide secure, clearly identified storage for workplace chemicals and potentially harmful substances. The range includes floor-standing cupboards, wall-mounted cabinets, low-height units, mobile cupboards, floor chests and selected higher-security models.
The correct cupboard should be selected according to the substances being stored, their safety data sheets, container dimensions, quantities, compatibility and the controls identified through the workplace COSHH risk assessment.
Construction and Finish
- Strong all-steel construction for professional workplace use
- Durable graphite grey powder-coated finish
- Germ Guard Active Technology paint on applicable models
- Hazard warning labels supplied for clear identification
- Designed for indoor industrial, commercial and workplace environments
- Designed and manufactured in the UK by QMP
The graphite grey finish distinguishes this range from the yellow hazardous substance cupboard collection. Cabinet colour alone does not determine which chemicals can be stored, so selection must be based on the substance properties and site risk assessment.
Available COSHH Cupboard Types
- Full-height floor-standing COSHH cupboards
- Low-height and under-bench cupboards
- Wall-mounted chemical storage cupboards
- Mobile COSHH cupboards
- Floor chests for larger containers
- Higher-security COSHH cupboard models
Select the format according to the available space, container dimensions, required storage capacity and level of access control. Check the individual product dimensions before ordering.
Adjustable Shelves
- Adjustable galvanised steel shelves on applicable models
- Spill-retaining shelf construction
- Maximum evenly distributed shelf load of 50 kg
- Adjustable positions accommodate different container heights
- Additional shelves may be available for selected cupboard sizes
The 50 kg shelf capacity applies when the load is distributed evenly. Heavy containers should normally be stored on lower shelves to support cupboard stability and safer handling.
Spill Containment
- Integral liquid-tight sump on applicable floor-standing cupboards
- Welded integrated sump on floor-chest models
- Spill-retaining shelves help restrict the spread of minor leaks
- Wall-mounted cupboards may not include an integral base sump
The sump and spill-retaining shelves support workplace spill-management procedures. They do not replace suitable containers, routine inspections, compatible absorbent materials or a documented emergency response plan.
Standard Locking
- Snag-free handles on applicable cupboard models
- Secure two-point locking on standard floor and wall cupboards
- Keys supplied according to the selected product specification
- Access can be restricted to authorised workplace personnel
Cabinets should remain locked when not in supervised use where the site assessment or workplace procedure requires controlled access.
Higher-Security COSHH Cupboards
- Fully welded all-steel construction on selected models
- Seven-lever safe lock for increased access protection
- Heavy-duty hinges on applicable security cupboards
- Concealed hinge fixings help resist unauthorised access
Higher-security cupboards should be considered where the nature of the stored materials, site access or internal procedures require greater protection than a standard two-point locking cupboard.
Wall-Mounted COSHH Cupboards
- Compact storage where floor space is limited
- Supplied pre-drilled for wall installation
- Wall fixings are not normally included
- Fixings must suit the wall construction and expected loaded weight
- May not include an integral base sump
Wall-mounted cabinets must be secured to a structurally suitable surface. The installer is responsible for selecting appropriate fixings and confirming that the wall can safely support the cupboard and its contents.
Mobile COSHH Cupboards
- Mobile configurations available within the range
- Suitable for flexible workplace storage and controlled movement
- Containers must be closed and secure before the cupboard is moved
- Movement routes should be level, clear and suitable for the load
Mobile cupboards should only be moved by authorised personnel and should not be treated as general-purpose transport equipment for open or unstable chemical containers.
COSHH Floor Chests
- Fully welded steel chest construction
- Welded integral liquid-retaining sump
- Angled lid discourages items being left on top
- Hasp-and-staple locking point
- Padlock not included unless stated otherwise
- Suitable for larger containers and bulky workplace materials
Optional Cupboard Stands
- Optional stands available for selected cupboard models
- Approximate stand height of 500 mm
- Adjustable foot helps compensate for uneven floors
- Raises the cupboard for easier access and floor clearance
Confirm stand compatibility with the selected cupboard before ordering. The loaded cupboard must remain stable and level after installation.
Reaction-to-Fire Classification
- Selected products have a reaction-to-fire classification to EN 13501-1
EN 13501-1 describes reaction-to-fire performance. It does not mean that the cupboard is a fire-resistant storage cabinet or that it is suitable for every flammable liquid. Check the safety data sheets and workplace fire-risk assessment before selecting storage.
COSHH Storage Considerations
- Review the safety data sheet for every substance
- Keep products in closed, correctly labelled containers
- Segregate incompatible chemicals where required
- Check that shelf and sump capacities suit the stored containers
- Restrict access according to workplace procedures
- Inspect shelves, locks and sumps regularly
- Remove leaks and damaged containers promptly and safely
A COSHH cupboard supports the storage controls identified through a risk assessment, but the cupboard alone does not make a workplace compliant. Storage arrangements must reflect the substances, quantities, exposure risks and emergency procedures at the individual site.
