Clear-Front Key Control

The transparent front allows staff to identify empty key positions without opening the cabinet. This can reduce unnecessary cabinet access and make it easier to identify keys that have not been returned at the end of a shift, maintenance task or vehicle booking.

The Perspex panel can be broken where emergency access is required. Because the front is designed to support visibility and emergency access, the cabinet should be installed within a supervised or controlled-access location.

Adjustable Key Organisation

Adjustable hook bars allow the internal layout to be configured around the organisation's key collection. The colour-coded and numbered positions can be used to separate keys by department, building, vehicle group, equipment type or another internal reference.

The supplied key tabs hang with their identifying numbers visible, helping authorised users locate and return keys to the correct position.

Viewable key cabinet organisation features
Feature Key-Management Benefit
Clear front Shows which key positions are occupied or empty
Numbered hook positions Provides an allocated location for each key
Colour-coded hook bars Helps separate keys into recognisable groups
Visible numbered key tabs Helps match keys to the correct cabinet position
Removable control index Records key locations and can be stored separately

Removable Key-Control Index

The control index provides a separate record of the keys allocated to each numbered hook. It can be removed from the cabinet and stored securely, preventing the complete key-location record from remaining directly beside the keys.

For improved security, use internal reference numbers rather than writing complete addresses, access codes, room descriptions or vehicle registrations directly on the key tags.

Standard and Optional Locking

The standard cabinet is fitted with a security key lock and supplied with two operating keys. The cabinet keys should be issued only to authorised personnel and stored securely when not in use.

CL1000 and padlocking cam-lock versions are also available. Select the lock according to the required access procedure, number of users and level of key control.

Viewable 24-key cabinet locking options

Typical Applications

  • Security control offices
  • Police, fire and ambulance facilities
  • Building reception and facilities-management offices
  • Schools, colleges and campus security departments
  • Transport depots and vehicle-control offices
  • Warehouses, workshops and maintenance departments
  • Local authorities and public-sector buildings
  • Commercial premises with controlled key access

Wall-Mounted Installation

Install the cabinet on a suitable solid wall using fixings appropriate for the wall construction, cabinet weight and site conditions. Secure mounting helps reduce the risk of the complete cabinet being removed.

Position the unit within a controlled area where authorised users can view and operate it without obstructing doors, corridors or emergency routes. Check the mounting height, door clearance and viewing angle before installation.

Choosing the Correct Key Cabinet

The System 24/G is intended for collections of up to 24 individual keys. Large key bunches, oversized tags and vehicle fobs may reduce the practical capacity, so check the complete key and tag arrangement before ordering.

Larger viewable models are available for 32 or 50 keys. For greater physical security or substantially larger key collections, consider a solid-front System Key Cabinet or Key Vault instead.

Capacity refers to individual numbered key positions. Bulky key bunches, large tags and vehicle fobs may reduce the practical number of keys that can be stored comfortably.

Clear Perspex Viewing Panel

The transparent front allows authorised staff to identify occupied and empty key positions without unlocking the cabinet. This can reduce unnecessary cabinet access and make missing keys easier to identify during routine checks.

The Perspex panel can be broken where emergency access is required. For this reason, the cabinet should be installed inside a controlled, supervised or access-restricted area rather than in an unattended public location.

Adjustable Hook Bars

The internal hook bars are colour coded and numbered. Their positions can be adjusted to accommodate different key lengths, tags and organisational requirements.

Colour coding can be used to separate keys by department, building, floor, vehicle group, equipment type or another internal reference.

Viewable key cabinet organisation features
Feature Purpose
Clear front panel Shows which numbered positions are occupied or empty
Numbered hooks Provides an allocated storage position for each key
Colour-coded hook bars Helps separate keys into identifiable groups
Visible numbered key tabs Helps users return keys to the correct hook
Removable control index Records key allocations and can be stored separately

Numbered Key Tabs

The key tabs are designed to hang with the identifying number visible. This helps users match each key to its numbered hook and return it to the correct position after use.

Use an internal reference number rather than displaying full addresses, access codes, vehicle registrations or sensitive room descriptions on the key tags.

Removable Control Index

Key locations can be recorded on the supplied control index. The index is removable, allowing the complete key-location record to be stored separately from the cabinet where additional security is required.

A separate issue-and-return register may also be used to record who has taken a key and when it is expected to be returned.

Security Lock

The cabinet is supplied with a security key lock and two operating keys. Cabinet keys should be issued only to authorised personnel and kept secure when they are not in use.

The clear-front design supports visual key control but does not provide the same physical protection as a solid-front high-security key safe. Select the cabinet type according to the value and security importance of the keys being stored.

Typical Applications

Typical uses for viewable key cabinets
Environment Typical Use
Security control offices Quick visual confirmation of issued and returned keys
Emergency services Organised storage for premises, vehicle and equipment keys
Facilities management Central control of building and maintenance keys
Transport operations Storage of vehicle, depot and restricted-area keys
Schools and colleges Controlled storage for classrooms, offices and site equipment

Wall Installation

Install the cabinet on a suitable solid wall using fixings appropriate for the cabinet weight, wall construction and site conditions. Secure installation helps reduce the risk of the entire cabinet being removed.

Position the cabinet where authorised users can view and operate it safely without obstructing doors, corridors or emergency routes. Check the mounting height, door clearance and viewing angle before installation.

Viewable Key Cabinet FAQs

What is a viewable key cabinet?

A viewable key cabinet is a lockable wall-mounted cabinet with a clear Perspex front. It allows authorised staff to see which numbered key positions are occupied or empty without opening the cabinet.

Which viewable key cabinet capacities are available?

Viewable key cabinets are available with 24, 32 or 50 individual key positions. Select a cabinet with spare capacity for future keys, vehicles, rooms or equipment.

Can I see which keys are missing without opening the cabinet?

Yes. The clear Perspex front allows staff to identify occupied and empty numbered positions without unlocking the cabinet.

Can the Perspex front be broken in an emergency?

Yes. The Perspex panel can be broken where emergency access is required. The cabinet should therefore be installed in a controlled or supervised location rather than an unattended public area.

Is a viewable key cabinet suitable for high-security keys?

It is designed primarily for visual key control in controlled areas. Keys requiring higher physical protection may be better stored in a solid-front security key cabinet or certified key safe. Compare the key cabinet range before selecting a model.

Can the internal hook layout be changed?

Yes. The colour-coded and numbered hook bars are adjustable, allowing the internal arrangement to be configured around different key sizes and organisational requirements.

Why are the key hook bars colour coded?

Colour coding helps separate keys by building, department, floor, vehicle group, equipment type or another internal category.

Are numbered key tags supplied?

The cabinet uses numbered key tabs designed to hang with their identifying numbers visible, helping users match keys to the correct hook positions.

What is the removable control index used for?

The control index records which key is allocated to each numbered position. It can be removed and stored separately so the complete key-location record is not kept directly beside the keys.

What lock is fitted to the viewable key cabinet?

The cabinet is supplied with a security key lock and two operating keys. Access to the cabinet keys should be restricted to authorised personnel.

Is the cabinet suitable for vehicle keys and fobs?

It may be suitable for vehicle keys and compatible fobs, but bulky key bunches and large tags can reduce practical capacity. Check the cabinet dimensions and key arrangement before ordering.

Where should a viewable key cabinet be installed?

Install it on a suitable solid wall inside a controlled or supervised area. The position should provide convenient access for authorised users without obstructing doors, corridors or emergency routes.

Which organisations use viewable key cabinets?

They are commonly used in security offices, emergency-service premises, transport depots, facilities departments, schools, warehouses, workshops and managed commercial buildings.

Where can I find key tags and other key-management products?

Browse the key cabinet range , view key tags and identification products or see other security products .
