Master Lock Safe Operation Guide
This guide is to assist with your Master Lock product and ensure you can store all your important documents and valuables with the least hassle. It outlines how to set up, reset, install and what to do should the worst happen and you lock yourself out. If the latter is the case, call 01284 749211 or email sales@totallocker.co.uk and we will help you resolve your nightmare.
Factory default code: Master Lock safes ship with the factory code 1-7-5-0-0-#. This is published in the manufacturer's documentation and is intended only for first-time setup.
When you change the code, write the code down somewhere secure. DO NOT STORE IT IN THE SAFE. By design the keypad locks can take a code from 2-8 digits long; Total Locker Service recommends a 6-8 digit code to ensure you get the most protection from your purchase.
Opening Your Safe for the First Time
In an emergency, the safe can be opened using your override key. Do not store your override key inside the safe. As a mechanism to ensure your own peace of mind, Total Locker Service advises that you try using your override key after setting a code. In the event of loss, we can provide replacement keys but you will need to know the key code for us to do so; this can be found on the keys and should be in the paperwork too.
Using the Override Key
- Remove the cover located between the knob and keypad.
- Insert the override key provided and turn counterclockwise.
- Turn the knob clockwise to open the door.
- Turn the key back clockwise to remove the key and replace the cover on the door.
Installing or Replacing the Batteries
Replace your batteries every two years. Don't dispose of the old ones — use them in your remote controls. This way your safe will never run out of charge.
Your safe should warn you prior to running totally out of battery. In the event you miss the warning, our contact details are at the top right of every page.
Battery Installation Procedure
- With the door open, remove the battery compartment cover located on the inside of the door by sliding the cover in the direction of the arrow.
- Install four (4) AA size alkaline batteries, following the polarity (+/-) markings in the battery compartment.
- Slide the battery cover back into place.
Note: Do not use rechargeable batteries or any other type of non-alkaline battery. Do not mix old and new batteries. Do not mix alkaline and other battery types.
If the keypad still doesn't respond after fresh batteries, check the battery springs for corrosion — Total Locker Service can replace these if you send us the locks.
Programming a New User Code
When setting a code, try to use a 6-8 digit code. If using years, avoid using them in the obvious ways — most break-ins with coded products are a result of predictable behaviours. It's important to set a code you will remember; if practical, keep a copy somewhere secure, separate from your override key.
Code Programming Procedure
- Open the safe's door and remove the battery compartment cover.
- Locate the programming button inside the battery compartment and press it. The yellow LED will turn on.
- Enter a new user code (between 2 and 8 digits) followed by the "#" key. The yellow LED will turn off, confirming the new code has been accepted and stored.
- Replace the battery compartment cover.
Note: Always test a new code before storing any valuables inside the safe.
Most people buy safes either to feel secure about their items being where they want them to be, or to cover insurance requirements. Total Locker Service will do our best to provide guidance to ensure you get the appropriate product to suit your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Master Lock Safes
Are Master Lock safes fireproof?
Many Master Lock safe models feature fire protection ratings, typically protecting contents for 30-60 minutes at temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C). Fire-resistant models are specifically designed to protect documents, cash, and digital media from heat damage. Check individual product specifications for exact fire ratings, as these vary by model and size.
What's the difference between digital and key lock Master Lock safes?
Digital Master Lock safes use electronic keypads with programmable codes and typically include backup keys for battery failure. They offer convenience, no physical keys to lose, and easy code changes. Key lock models use traditional high-security keys with no batteries required. Many digital models also include biometric fingerprint scanners for the fastest access. Your choice depends on usage frequency, number of users, and personal preference.
What size Master Lock safe do I need?
Safe size depends on what you're storing. Small safes (under 0.5 cubic feet) work for passports, jewelry, and small cash amounts. Medium safes (0.5-1.5 cu ft) accommodate documents, electronics, and handguns. Large safes (1.5+ cu ft) suit file storage, laptops, and business needs. Measure your items and allow 20-30% extra space for future storage. Contact us on 01284 749211 for personalized size recommendations.
Can Master Lock safes be mounted to the floor or wall?
Yes, most Master Lock safes include pre-drilled mounting holes and hardware for floor or wall installation. Mounting significantly increases security by preventing safe removal. Smaller models can be wall-mounted in closets or cabinets, while larger models are typically floor-mounted. Professional installation is recommended for larger safes to ensure proper anchoring. We offer installation services across the UK.
How do I reset the code on a Master Lock digital safe?
To reset a Master Lock digital safe code, open the safe door, locate the reset button inside (usually near the hinge), and follow the manufacturer's instructions to enter a new code. The specific process varies by model. Keep your backup override keys accessible during code changes. If you've forgotten your code and don't have override keys, contact Master Lock customer service or a professional locksmith for assistance.
Do Master Lock safes come with a warranty?
Yes, Master Lock safes typically come with manufacturer warranties ranging from 1 to 5 years depending on the model. Warranties cover manufacturing defects and mechanical failures but not damage from improper use, forced entry attempts, or environmental damage beyond the safe's rating. Keep your purchase receipt and register your product with Master Lock for full warranty coverage.
Are Master Lock safes waterproof?
Select Master Lock safe models offer water resistance or waterproof ratings, protecting contents from flood damage, pipe bursts, or fire hose water. Look for models with waterproof seals and ratings such as ETL Verified for water resistance. Standard models provide moisture resistance but not full waterproof protection. Check individual product specifications for exact water protection ratings.
What's the price range for Master Lock safes?
Master Lock safe prices vary based on size, features, and security level. Compact personal safes start from around £50-£100, medium home safes range from £100-£300, and large fireproof business models can cost £300-£800+. Digital models with advanced features like biometric access typically cost more than basic key lock models.
