ASSA SENSE Stand-Alone MIFARE RFID Locker Locks
ASSA SENSE RFID locker locks provide keyless access to compatible lockers and storage cabinets using suitable MIFARE contactless credentials. Users operate the lock by presenting an authorised card, fob or wristband rather than using a physical key or numerical code.
Each lock is battery-powered and operates as an independent stand-alone unit. The standard ASSA SENSE does not require permanent wiring, a network connection or computer-based management software, making it suitable for both new locker installations and selected retrofit projects.
Public and Private Locker Modes
ASSA SENSE can be configured for assigned-user lockers or shared day-use lockers:
- Private mode: designated, pre-registered credentials provide access to an assigned locker. This is suitable for staff, workplace and personal storage lockers.
- Public mode: a user secures an available locker with a compatible credential. Once the locker is opened, it is released for the next user.
MIFARE Cards, Fobs and Wristbands
The lock is compatible with most suitable RFID credentials using MIFARE technology. These may include cards, key fobs and wristbands, depending on the credential type and system configuration.
MIFARE is a family of contactless credential technologies rather than one universal format. Existing building-access cards should therefore be checked before ordering. Providing the card specification or a sample credential allows compatibility to be confirmed.
User, Inspector and Master Credentials
Different credential levels help facilities staff operate and manage the lockers without issuing mechanical keys:
- User credentials for normal locker access
- Inspector credentials for authorised staff access
- Master credentials for administration and emergency access
Programming cards are used to configure functions and access permissions. A copying card can also support the setup of multiple locks. Required programming credentials should be confirmed when planning the installation.
Battery-Powered Stand-Alone Operation
Internal battery operation removes the need to run power or data cables to each locker door. This can simplify installation where wiring an existing locker bank would be difficult or disruptive.
Sound and light indicators provide feedback during normal operation. If the internal batteries become depleted, temporary emergency power can be supplied through the USB connection so authorised access can be restored and the batteries replaced.
The USB connection provides emergency power. It should not be described as a network, data-management or permanent power connection.
Locker-Door Thickness and Retrofit Installation
ASSA SENSE is available with two barrel lengths:
- Short-barrel version for doors between 1 and 15 mm thick
- Long-barrel version for doors between 15 and 23 mm thick
The lock can be suitable for selected retrofit projects because the existing lock footprint and fixings may be reused, with an additional fixing hole required for the upper screw.
Compatibility must still be checked before ordering. Confirm the locker door thickness, existing preparation, fixing positions, operating direction and required cam. Locks with a similar external appearance may use different rear connections or cam arrangements.
Dry and Wet-Area Locker Installations
The standard ASSA SENSE is intended for dry indoor environments. It can be used in an appropriate wet-area installation when the specified rubber gasket is fitted.
The gasket does not automatically make every installation waterproof. The locker door, fixings and complete installation must also be suitable for swimming pools, changing rooms, spas and other damp environments.
Compatible Locker Cams
ASSA SENSE can be used with compatible ASSA ABLOY standard cams. The correct cam depends on the locker construction, door handing, locking direction and the position of the frame or locking point.
A torque-overload protected clutch is incorporated into the handle to help protect the operating mechanism if excessive turning force is applied.
ASSA SENSE and SENSE+ Systems
Standard ASSA SENSE is a stand-alone lock configured using programming credentials. It should not be confused with ASSA SENSE+, which is a separate version intended for installations requiring dedicated software, card administration, lock settings or audit information.
Confirm which system is required before ordering, particularly where the project needs centralised credential management or an electronic audit trail.
