Disney Store Staff Lockers: Workplace Storage Case Study

Total Locker Service worked with The Disney Store to develop a secure staff-locker solution for storing personal belongings in the workplace.

The project began in 2015, when Disney approached us to discuss locker options for employees. The requirement was not simply to supply a standard locker, but to identify a storage system that suited the available space, the items staff needed to store and the way the lockers would be managed day to day.

Understanding the Staff Storage Requirement

Disney needed secure storage for employees’ personal belongings, including items such as wallets, purses and mobile phones.

Several locker types were considered during the early stages of the project, including heated lockers and compact personal-effects lockers.

The aim was to balance storage capacity, ease of use, security and the practical management of a relatively large workplace installation.

Comparing Different Locker Options

Rather than assuming that one locker type would automatically be suitable, Total Locker Service discussed several options with the customer.

These included compact MiniMinder-style lockers for personal belongings as well as larger and more specialist storage options.

The locking system was considered alongside the locker itself because the way staff access a locker can have a significant effect on administration, replacement parts and day-to-day operation.

Testing a Sample Locker

Because the project involved a significant number of lockers, Disney wanted to confirm that the proposed product would meet its requirements before placing the main order.

Total Locker Service therefore arranged for a sample locker to be supplied for evaluation.

This gave the customer an opportunity to assess the size, construction, compartment layout and locking arrangement in a real working environment rather than relying solely on drawings or product literature.

Feedback from the trial was positive, and following a small number of adjustments to the quotation and specification, the main order was placed.

Choosing the Locking System

Several lock options were discussed as part of the specification process.

An adjustable Ojmar coin lock was selected for the installation. Adjustable coin locks provide greater flexibility than fixed-denomination mechanisms because the operating coin value can be changed within the limits of the lock design.

This can be useful for organisations that want to retain the option to alter how temporary-use lockers are operated without replacing the complete locking system.

Project Management and Installation

Once the order was confirmed, Total Locker Service assigned Helen Ponder as project manager to coordinate customer communication, delivery and logistics.

The lockers were delivered and installed in November 2015.

Managing the project through a single point of contact helped coordinate the specification, delivery arrangements and final installation.

Personal-Effects Lockers with Vision Panel Doors

Compact personal-effects lockers are designed for smaller items rather than coats, bags or full changes of clothing.

Typical uses include storing wallets, purses, mobile phones, keys and other personal belongings during a shift.

Vision-panel doors can be useful where authorised staff need to identify whether a compartment is occupied or inspect the visible contents without opening every locker.

Depending on the product range, personal-effects lockers can be supplied in multiple compartment configurations and with different locking systems to suit the workplace.

Heated Lockers Were Also Considered

Heated lockers were considered during the early stages of the Disney project as one of several possible storage solutions.

These are designed for applications where wet or damp clothing needs to be stored and dried during the working day, making them particularly relevant to industrial, utilities, construction and outdoor-working environments.

What the Disney Project Demonstrates

The Disney Store project shows the value of matching the locker specification to the way staff will actually use and manage the storage system.

• Define what needs to be stored: small personal items may require a different locker from coats, bags or workwear.
• Compare locker formats: compartment size and quantity should reflect the number of users and the items being stored.
• Choose the lock around the operating model: temporary-use and permanently assigned lockers may require different access systems.
• Test where appropriate: a sample unit can help confirm that a proposed product is suitable before a large order is placed.
• Plan logistics: delivery and installation should be considered as part of the project rather than after the specification has been finalised.
