Lord’s Cricket Ground Locker Installation & Keyless Locking Case Study

As part of ongoing investment to maintain Lord’s Cricket Ground as a world-class sporting and hospitality venue, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) commissioned Total Locker Service to provide new locker storage, replacement locker doors and keyless locking solutions across several areas of the site.

The work included the MCC Cricket Academy, event catering and hospitality facilities, where different users, environments and management requirements called for different locker and cabinet locking solutions.

Working with MCC at Lord’s

“Having worked with Total Locker Service for many years, their work ethic and knowledge of the industry is excellent. Nothing is too much trouble and MCC looks forward to working with the team on future projects.”

John Dawson, Estates Project Manager at Lord’s

Total Locker Service works with customers to identify the most practical storage and locking solution for each application rather than specifying the same system everywhere.

At Lord’s, this meant considering how the lockers would be used, who needed access, how management override would work, the appearance of the installation and whether existing equipment could be refurbished rather than completely replaced.

MCC Cricket Academy Locker Refurbishment

For the MCC Cricket Academy, we discussed six different combination-lock options with MCC and explained the practical strengths and limitations of each system before a final specification was selected.

Digilock electronic locker locks were chosen because they provided the combination of appearance, shared-use operation and management access required for a high-profile changing-room environment.

The shared-use system allowed users to secure an available locker using a self-selected four-digit code rather than requiring a permanently issued locker key. Management access was provided through the appropriate override system, allowing authorised staff to assist users and manage the lockers when required.

Refurbishing Existing Lockers with New Doors

Rather than automatically replacing the complete locker installation, Total Locker Service proposed retaining the existing locker bodies and fitting new laminate doors.

This provided a cost-effective refurbishment route while helping MCC retain serviceable equipment instead of replacing it unnecessarily. The new doors also gave the changing room a significantly refreshed appearance.

Our engineers installed approximately 100 new laminate locker doors and fitted the Digilock units, engraved number discs and user instruction panels.

Once installation was complete, the locking system was programmed and MCC staff were shown how to operate and manage it, including the procedures required when users needed assistance.

For organisations with existing lockers that remain structurally sound, refurbishment can sometimes provide an alternative to complete replacement. Total Locker Service also provides locker servicing, repairs, maintenance and refurbishment for existing commercial locker installations.

Keyless Lockers for Event Catering Staff

MCC also required a more practical storage system for hospitality and catering staff.

The previous arrangement involved managing keys and padlocks for large numbers of catering personnel, creating an unnecessary administrative burden during busy events.

Our solution was designed to use the available space efficiently while maximising the number of secure locker compartments. Sloping tops were included to discourage items being left on top of the lockers and to help keep the area tidy.

After considering several keyless alternatives, a Lowe & Fletcher four-digit reprogrammable combination lock with master-key override was selected.

This arrangement allowed temporary and visiting staff to set their own PIN while giving authorised management personnel a practical method of resetting lockers between users or events.

Electronic Locks for Executive Hospitality Suites

Following refurbishment of the executive hospitality suites, MCC also wanted to improve the security of cabinets within the boxes.

Total Locker Service considered several electronic combination-lock options before an Ojmar OCS battery-operated electronic keypad lock was selected.

The choice was influenced by both appearance and operation. Its white finish and compact design complemented the modern furniture in the hospitality suites, while keypad operation provided convenient user access without the need for conventional cabinet keys.

The locking system also provided management override functionality so authorised personnel could regain access when necessary.

Our team planned the installation, tested the locks for correct operation and completed the work within one day.

Choosing the Right Lock for Each Application

The Lord’s project demonstrates why locker and cabinet locking systems should be selected around the way each area is actually used.

  • Shared-use changing rooms: keyless operation can remove the need to issue permanent locker keys.
  • Event staff storage: reprogrammable locks can make it easier to manage changing groups of users.
  • Hospitality cabinets: appearance can be important alongside security and management access.
  • Existing locker installations: replacement doors, locks and identification components may allow useful equipment to be refurbished rather than completely replaced.

Total Locker Service supplies a wide range of locker locks and replacement locker locks, including key-operated, combination, keypad, RFID, coin-operated and electronic systems for commercial applications.

Digilock Shared-Use Locker Locks

Digilock manufactures electronic locking systems for lockers, cabinets and furniture, with keypad and RFID options available for applications including leisure, education, workplace, healthcare and hospitality environments.

Depending on the model and configuration, Digilock systems can support shared-use or assigned-use operation. Shared-use locking is particularly useful where different people use available lockers throughout the day rather than having one permanently allocated compartment.

Commercial Lockers, Locks and Refurbishment

Total Locker Service supplies commercial lockers, replacement locker locks, keys, doors, number discs and spare parts for schools, workplaces, leisure facilities, healthcare sites and other commercial organisations across the UK.

We can also help organisations assess existing locker installations and determine whether repair, lock replacement, refurbishment or complete replacement is the most practical route.
